Azusa Nagasawa has been a fan favorite since her 2008 debut. However, these last six months, she's been taking time off from filming. What happened during this time? The first of three interviews.

Interviewer: So you debuted in 2008?
Azusa Nagasawa: I've been an AV star for 5 years now though I'm sure most know that I took some time off recently.

I: How long did you take time off for?
AN: A little over half a year.

I: Did anything happen? Your fans were very worried and thought you may have retired.
AN: Is that so? I saw comments on my blog with people asking the same thing. I didn't see anyone wishing me the best on my filming so I wasn't sure the best way to reply.

I: Then this interview will be good to help put your fans at ease.
AN: Yes, I think everyone will be pleased.

I: To get down to business, can you tell us what led up to you taking time off?
AN: I wasn't really feeling it last October. I had a meeting with my manager about what to do about my future job prospects as an actress. I told him I was thinking of quitting as my future as an actress was not very clear to me.

I: And then?
AN: He disagreed by saying I still had more to do. I felt like this gave me a second wind to try my hardest at acting which I did well into December.

I: But?
AN: That second wind was short-lived and I couldn't handle it for long. I really felt like I was only putting part of myself into productions resulting in acting I felt kind of sorry for. I told my manager I really needed a break and from then on I also started updating my blog less and less.

I: Can you expand on what you meant by not being able to handle it?
AN: I was all fine in the morning along with arriving at the studio and applying my makeup. However, I started to feel off after I got naked. Up till then, I never felt that way. It was 100% what Azusa Nagasawa was not supposed to be. When I was entangled with an actor, thoughts of 'why am I having sex with this person?' popped up in my head causing me to feel unnaturally calm.

I: Was there anything in particular that brought about that feeling of 'off'-feeling?
AN: There may not have one thing in particular, but it may have been an issue with the time. Around then I was working on a photo-book, a music CD, and various filming. I think doing this all at once caused me to misplace my emotional drive.

I: You certainly were engaging yourself in various genres of filming back then.
AN: That's right. This was the time I lifted my ban on performing anal sex to the delight of everyone and I felt really energized about it--”The next one's gonna be anal!” Everyone was anxious to see the new me. However, after I did that I wasn't sure how to continue with my acting.

I: Are you back to normal now?
AN: I'm actually studying in school. I was in this work for so long I forgot about all the other opportunities someone my age can take.

I: Did you change in any way?
AN: Until now, I've always thought of myself first and foremost as an AV actress and acted accordingly. I was cautious both at work and out and about.

I: How did you feel about this change?
AN: I felt fresh, but I still had to become accustomed to the change. I actually just started a regular daytime part-time job and it feels like a real fresh start.

Interviewer: Looking back, why did you decide to enter the AV world?
Azusa Nagasawa: I was scouted.

I: How so?
AN: I was catcalled out near Shinjuku station about doing adult work. I was actually looking for a way to get in at the time...

I: You were?
AN: Yea, but I was not thinking of taking the brothel route, but I did have an interview at a place where I would watch men do their thing.

I: Weren't there other agencies for high pay work that didn't deal with brothels posted in magazines? What made you decide on the masturbation club route over AV?

I: I see. How did you further sexual encounters progress?

I: Was there any reason for that?
AN: I had no retirement plans. There is no such thing as a 100% Azusa Nagasawa persona even in the studio. Either way, my personal life comes first and I'm aware that this may come off as rude to my fans.

I: You sure are a saint.
AN: No, not even.

I: I was referring to how you care so much about your fans.
AN: Well, they care about me so I cannot lie when I talk to them. I go out of my way at every event to shake each fan's hand and thank them or I'll regret it.

I: When did you realize you had such a dedicated fan-base?
AN: I wonder. I sure did notice fans waiting for long periods of time at events and I'm happy to give something back to them since they made the journey to see me.

I: Any really good messages from fans from those events?
AN: I've had fans wait outside after events telling me they have all my DVDs and giving me letters and presents which have made me very happy.

I: What kind of presents do you receive?
AN: I wonder if many of my fans were embarrassed to buy me womanly things like Rilakkuma which I have mentioned being a fan of. Other fans have written me letters which I'm so happy about since they put so much time into them.

I: Are you a fan of anyone?
AN: I sure am! I'm a fan of Arashi. After starting this job, I sometimes felt like a famous writer at a book signing. I've seen fans lined up and have fretted that each wouldn't have a chance to really talk with me so I try hard to prevent that from happening.

I: You've such a pure heart. What do you like about doing AV?
AN: It's a totally unknown world that I have privilege of being part of. It's also quite a rush to meet people in the industry up close and personal. I also think it's great how my career has drawn me out of being an introvert.

Interviewer: Have you 'lost' anything by doing AV?
Azusa Nagasawa: If anything, I've gained more friends by doing AV.

I: Have you non-AV friends found out about your career?
AN: One emailed me asking me if I knew of someone named Azusa Nagasawa. I've sometimes denied that it's me, but usually I stay honest even though that ends up shocking them. Now I have somewhat of a complex. Some people can't see me for who I am while others support me. Others are incredibly surprised at first and all of this worries me.

I: So you've had a chance to talk about you AV career with friends?
AN: I think it's best to be open.

I: Naked both in body and soul?
AN: Yes, that's right. I think that's a good aspect of being in AV.

I: That's good to hear. Do you think there are other actresses besides yourself that can stand the test of time in this business?
AN: Connecting with your fans is important and I'm happy how it's worked out for me though I'm not sure exactly why it happened. Actresses should try to reach out to their fans and be on good terms with them.

I: I see! The bond between you and fans. By the way, do you watch movies starring other actresses?
AN: I definitely do and I can become very absorbed in the work of others. In particular, I'm fond of Ai Uehara.

I: What about her do you like?
AN: She'll do pretty much anything. I'll also generally accept most proposals, but she goes above any beyond. Also, Haruki Satou's explosive orgasms are amazing. I, on the other hand, can't really squirt. I'm jealous of people who do things I cannot. It inflames me!

Without joining this industry, my life would have been a lot less wild and drab with me taking less risks. I think being part of this industry has made me a nail that sticks out immune to any peer pressure.

I: You seem to have no regrets about getting naked.
AN: Absolutely not! I've lost some things along the way, but I've gained much more and what I've gained I dearly love.

I: 10 years from now, what will you look back upon having done?
AN: I wonder. Well, I know that either way, I'd have amassed many fans who enjoy my career which I took the chance on entering and ended up being very proud of.
